Air Canada has confirmed it’ll become the launch customer of the latest Airbus Airspace cabin to feature on the A220 family.
The first A220, which Airbus will deliver, is expected to arrive in 2026. It will offer customers greater overhead storage space and thus make flying more comfortable.
Airbus’ Airspace cabin, which is also featured on other planes produced by the planemaker, has been a big hit already, with more people skipping checking luggage and carrying suitcases aboard the aircraft.
Customers taking additional baggage fill these overhead compartments quickly, especially on single-aisle journeys, resulting in limited space for most passengers.
At terminals around Canada and internationally, for flights operated by Air Canada, it’ll be common to hear that the crew may not be able to accommodate all baggage on a flight and, as a result, will offer free checked baggage for those willing.
However, Airbus says that the new A220 Airspace cabin features XL bins, which will increase the capacity of bags by more than 15%. The features do not stop there; there’ll also be a new ceiling design and lighting to improve customers’ inflight experience.

Air Canada’s reliance on the A220 has reached 34 units, which is the number currently operated. However, the airline also has 31 more jets on order.
Why The A220 Becomes More Important
The A220 already has a vital role across the Air Canada network; however, that will increase tenfold as the airline moves all its active 737 MAX jets to its Rouge branding.
The 737 MAX will not necessarily depart the Air Canada Group but will make a calculated switch internally. The flag carrier confirms that permitting delays the transition will have occurred by 2028 and will hopefully balance growth and renewal efforts.
Air Canada has seen substantial increases in demand across its destinations. The Rouge brand was launched in 2012, but now there’s a greater focus on meeting demand.

The carrier is also aware that the Rouge branding is beginning to see its fleet age, and the need for a replacement is more than present. As a result, the Group is making necessary changes to secure the long-term future of this division.
Therefore, by 2028, the mainline division will benefit even more from the newly configured cabin on the A220, which will play a more prominent role in its day-to-day operation.
