Air Canada has published its second-quarter financial results for 2024, which show operating revenues of approximately $5.5 billion.

Throughout the second quarter, Air Canada said it focused much on the customers and ensuring its operations remained stable.

This critical area of the business has seen improvements year over year of 10 percentage points, strictly focusing on their on-time performance.

Air Canada highlights this substantial performance improvement even after it has continued to significantly expand its operation by adding new routes, which could’ve hurt the on-time performance but didn’t.

Across the quarter, 11.6 million customers were transported while operating income reached $466 million. The solid customer numbers were primarily driven by increased demand and a capacity increase across the board, representing 6.5%.

Despite these customer increases, the second-quarter profit was $410 million, halving the yearly results as operating costs increased and the international market struggled.

Total operating expenses rose some 9% to just over 5 billion, which doesn’t come as a shock. The rise in operating costs is being widely reported industry-wide, and airlines such as Air Canada must find ways to mitigate the effects to ensure stability for the long term.

Air Canada has been securing new lease agreements in the form of 737 MAX jets to aid domestic travel but has been looking to optimise its international route network to cope with the complexities that come.

The airline unveiled an international expansion plan horizon; however, many of these markets are not currently within reach because of aircraft availability.

As a result, Air Canada needs to remain cautious with its expansion plans and optimisation until it has additional aircraft that can act as cover for the future.

The second quarter’s highlights included diversifying the international route network, which was highlighted by flying to Singapore, Stockholm, and India.
