Air Canada is making changes to its Airbus A321XLR network before delivery of the first aircraft, cancelling planned deployments on specific routes.

As part of the network reshuffle, the initially planned June 2026 Montreal-Palma de Mallorca route will not proceed; the aircraft has been removed from the schedule.

Meanwhile, the anticipated deployment of the Airbus A321XLR between Montreal and Dublin will not proceed, following the same fate as the Palma de Mallorca service.

Additionally, service frequencies to Toulouse and Edinburgh, which were scheduled to receive the A321XLR, have been reduced, and the launch date for services from Montreal to Porto and Nantes has been adjusted.

Under revised forecasts, Air Canada will deploy its newest aircraft, the A321XLR, on service to Toulouse from 15 May 2026; however, this is subject to change based on the airline’s deployment decisions and the aircraft’s on-time delivery.

Air Canada’s A321XLR Toronto Base

Once delivered, Air Canada has confirmed that the Airbus A321XLR will operate from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), an essential hub for this next-generation aircraft.

For the Canadian flag carrier, this represents the second base for the A321XLR, with Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) previously announced as the first.

Choosing Toronto was easy, according to the airline, as part of a continued emphasis on leveraging cities in eastern Canada to facilitate travel on transatlantic routes between city pairings with strong demand that may not have been previously viable under existing models.

The range of up to 4,700nm makes Toronto a strong gateway, alongside Montreal, for thinner routes. The ability to avoid relying on widebody aircraft for specific markets allows the airline’s route map to grow considerably.

Narrowbody efficiency reduces fuel costs while maintaining premium options at the front of the aircraft, including 14 lie-flat Signature Class seats to meet premium demand and boost profitability.

With the A321XLR arriving as the 737 MAX departs from the Rouge division, the unit represents a strategic shift to relying exclusively on Airbus for single-aisle operations, both domestically and internationally across the mainline division.

More Routes Planned For A321XLR

While some routes have been axed entirely with the A321XLR, others remain, and Air Canada is shifting strategy with a fresh announcement.

Aligning with the opening of a new base in Toronto for the A321XLR, Air Canada will leverage this to extend services to Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and Manchester Airport (MAN) beyond the Northern Summer 2026 schedule and into 2026.

From October, flights will become year-round as the airline attempts to build its primary global hub. It’ll also receive the A321XLR, which the airline hopes will bring a fresh feel to these markets.

Bottom Line: Route Shifts For The A321XLR

Air Canada is axing specific routes planned to receive its newest aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR, in favour of further schedule changes.

With a new Toronto Pearson base, the airline is deploying the new aircraft to additional locations while pushing back the launch of service to other cities as it prepares for its first delivery.
