After a multi-year absence stemming from the effects of the global pandemic and a grounding applied to the Airbus A380, Lufthansa has resumed scheduled operations to New York JFK with the world’s largest passenger plane.

The Airbus A380 fittingly, on July 4th, replaced an existing service previously operated by the A340 and returns after almost four years. The Munich to New York JFK flight compliments an existing Munich to Boston service, which has been part of Lufhansa’s initial resumption plan for the A380.

During the pandemic, Lufthansa had initially pulled the plug on the world’s largest passenger plane in favour of retaining more fuel-efficient types. However, as demand surged and arrived faster than anticipated, Lufthansa prepared the aircraft for re-entry to service.

The aircraft will thus add thousands of more seats between the two cities and operate daily. This is notably the first time the Lufthansa A380 has arrived in New York JFK since the latter stages of 2019.

While Boston and New York JFK were the first two initial locations outlined that’d see the A380 return, Lufthansa has recently confirmed the A380 will head towards Los Angeles and Bangkok towards the latter stages of this calendar year as they boost capacity.
