Lufthansa City Airlines will begin flying the Airbus A220-300 as early as the first week of 2027.
The Lufthansa Group subsidiary has confirmed it will introduce the aircraft into scheduled passenger service on 5 January 2027, marking a new era of single-aisle connectivity.
Lufthansa City Airlines’ A220 routes revealed
According to schedule filings current as of the second week of October 2026, the A220-300 will begin scheduled passenger operations with Lufthansa City Airlines on 5 January 2026 from Frankfurt Airport (FRA).
On the A220-300’s first day of operations, the German carrier will offer hub service to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) and Brussels Airport (BRU). The network, while small to begin with, will enter service within a month of launch, aligning with the delivery of the new regional single-aisle jet expansion.
Lufthansa City Airlines’ filed network will expand by 1 February 2027, with the decision to launch services to several markets using the A220. Still from Frankfurt, on 1 February, flights to Dresden (DRS), Hamburg (HAM), and Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) will use the Airbus A220-300.
From 2 February 2027, Lufthansa City Airlines will add Dusseldorf (DUS) and Hannover (HAJ) to the initial list of Airbus A220-300 destinations, with more cities expected as deliveries ramp up.

Lufthansa City Airlines’ rollout with the Airbus A220-300 quickly establishes Frankfurt as the aircraft’s initial operating base, as expected. The aircraft’s fleet information already indicates that Lufthansa will deploy the A220 from here initially and then begin operating from Munich Airport (MUC) when capacity permits.
First delivery of the A220-300 expected next month
For Lufthansa City Airlines to begin entering the A220-300 into scheduled commercial service, it needs to take delivery of its first model, expected in November ahead of the January debut.
The gap between delivery in November and the start of scheduled passenger flights in January will give the business time to complete the crucial familiarization period with the new single-aisle aircraft. While the A220 forms part of other airlines’ fleets within Lufthansa Group, this is new for City airlines.
During the familiarization window, the airline will ramp up crew preparations, and operational readiness work will also be required to ensure no hiccups occur when the jet begins deployment. Lufthansa has relied heavily on airBaltic for the operational readiness programme in anticipation of the A220-300, with the Latvian carrier leading pilot training.
The pilot training programme began in May, with several pilots from Lufthansa City Airlines designated to the A220, training with airBaltic through simulator sessions, theory, and supervised flying. The A220s will join an established Airbus single-aisle network next month.
40 Airbus A220-300s ordered for Lufthansa
Lufthansa Group has been patiently awaiting the first delivery of its A220-300 for City Airlines, following a December 2023 deal for up to 60 of the type, split between 40 firm and 20 options.
The options are separate and naturally require Lufthansa Group to assess the success of the A220s deployment upon launch and development before deciding whether to convert them to firm orders, avoiding the need for new negotiations.
The aircraft will seat 148 passengers, with a published passenger layout indicating Business and Economy Class will feature a preferred seating zone with extra legroom seats. The more premium-heavy configuration aims to transform City Airlines’ division and improve connections to Frankfurt and Munich hubs for onward long-haul travel.

Lufthansa says the A220-300 is well suited to short-haul feeder economics and, with its smaller capacity than the A320neo, can better match demand on thinner European routes, bringing customers to hubs for onward connectivity.
The redefinition of Lufthansa’s operations also follows long-standing labour tensions, walkouts, and revised contracts that have driven operating costs up and forced brand shuffling to protect the company from further employee disgruntlement.
