ITA Airways is continuing to battle aircraft groundings spurred on by continued pressures from engine woes.

Speaking with Corriere.it, the airline’s CEO said that in the first six months of 2025, there had been an improvement; however, challenges continue to impact its day-to-day operations.

Joerg Eberhart said that the airline is currently battling groundings across its fleet, with around 20 aircraft parked for various reasons, which is a fifth of the fleet, thus a considerable number.

Despite these obstacles, there’s renewed optimism for the airline as it sees a stake acquired by Lufthansa equating to 41% and with that greater control from the Group in a bid to develop the Italian business.

ITA Airways states that it’s also performing better than last year and considers itself ahead of budget, but has a negative EBIT of 46 million euros and leasing contracts worth around 50 million euros, which still puts it in the red.

The ITA Airways Grounding Data

ITA Airways has a very young fleet, averaging at 6.5 years and being the predecessor to the long-struggling Alitalia before its collapse, has attempted to right the wrongs and find ways to be more efficient.

The carrier has 101 aircraft to its name; however, fleet data as of September 26, 2025, shows that 20 units are parked across its division, with only the two widebody jet programs for the A330 and A350 families unaffected.

Of the affected aircraft, the airline has the A320 family parked, with one A320-200 and eight A320s; the eight units grounded from this model almost outnumber the units of this model.

Next, eight of the Airbus A220s remain parked, representing 30% of the commitment to this regional jet, with aircraft in both the A220-100 and A220-300 models parked.

ITA Airways also has seven Airbus A321neos in its fleet; however, two of these are currently parked, leaving just five units active, which represents a far from ideal scenario for the Italian carrier.

These aircraft are meant to drive the airline forward, and while on paper their perfromance stacks up against any competing aircraft, they will excel once in the air. However, airlines around the world have struggled with reliability woes that have been ongoing for years.

As a result, spurred on by the global engine crisis that has broadly affected Airbus single-aisle aircraft due to Pratt & Whitney GTF issues, jets from the A220 and A320neo families have been grounded for an extended period.

ITA Airways is ultimately one of the many going through something similar, and while some airlines expect things to improve sooner rather than later, not all share the same view and believe these reliability concerns will persist through to the end of the decade.
