Ethiopian Airlines is moving forward with renewed optimism despite challenges, and it expects the next era of its operation to be strong.

The airline reported revenue increases of 8%, rising to USD 7.6 billion; however, overall growth across the financial year dropped by 15%.

The figures from the most recent financial year, which ended on July 7, were also highlighted by a significant increase in overall passenger numbers.

During the period, Ethiopian Airlines, which is proud to hold the title of the biggest carrier in Africa, was able to transport 19 million people, representing an increase of 11%.

The makeup of these passenger figures was 15.2 million flying internationally and 3.9 million across its domestic network, further highlighting the importance of the brand in linking Ethiopia with the world.

The year also saw growth in the fleet, which enabled the launch of new routes, but it certainly wasn’t without some challenges across the business, which still need to be overcome.

Throughout the year, Ethiopian Airlines acquired 13 new aircraft to build on its existing fleet. This allowed for the launch of six new destinations, adding to the international network, bringing essential connectivity to locations.

Some of those challenges, as confirmed by the Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, came from the global conflict and geopolitical tensions, which have, without really trying, impacted the aviation sector.

Tasew pointed towards the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, alongside the many crises that hurt the Middle East continuously and neighbouring locations.

However, closer to home, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo also hurt its ability to operate as fully intended. Still, despite that, there’s renewed optimism that a new era awaits the business with many exciting opportunities planned.

Ethiopian Airlines Targets Australia

One of Ethiopian Airlines’ more exciting planned endeavours and one that has undoubtedly been long speculated across the industry and by avid onlookers is the launch of service to Australia.

Over the past few months, the regional manager for Asia Pacific of the airline confirmed that preparations were well underway to establish the company in Australia.

With many cities available, there has been much talk of the possible opportunity to serve Melbourne before any other city, backed by data.

However, to take shape, the airline needs aircraft that are capable of serving the long distances that would connect Africa and Australia, arguably a now underserved nonstop segment.

Making all of this possible is the future of the airline’s operation, which sees the addition of many next-generation jets such as the high-capacity A350, the 777X for the first time and more widebodies on top of that.

Discussions are still ongoing and a decision on the formal launch has yet to be made. Still, it remains of interest to the business. It is part of ultimately the many endeavours being studied by the business to elevate it as a true global carrier moving into the 2030s and beyond.

Therefore, a new era presents itself for Ethiopian Airlines, including finding ways to bring more people to Africa and be recognised as an industry leader as well, something that new aircraft and routes to countries will make possible.
