ITA Airways is continuing to progress with expansion plans under the Lufthansa Group with the launch of new routes.

The Italian carrier, which took over the reins from Alitalia, is seeking to evolve into the network that’ll see a broader expansion across its international markets.

The airlines’ international network, particularly on the long-haul front, has been a persistent focus for the brand as it seeks to increase market share.

Now, with expansion at the centre of attention for ITA Airways, new markets are expected to come within reach as expansion is implemented over the next four years.

One international market of specific focus for the airline is direct flights to Newark. A location that makes excellent sense, thanks to its being part of the Star Alliance airport hubs, driven by United Airlines, and with the presence of Air Canada.

The ability to leverage airports which are home to Star Alliance carriers is driven by the airline making the switch across to this global alliance next and departing SkyTeam, thanks to the investment from Lufthansa Group.

However, away from Newark, the airline is also targeting Houston as part of broader efforts to expand its U.S. network. Additional connectivity options will also be made available to the airline, thanks to codeshare partnerships.

Other Focuses For ITA Airways

Given Lufthansa Group’s grip on ITA Airways and its planned increase to a majority stake, a fair degree of liaison work will be required to determine the best location to send ITA Airways-operated aircraft moving forward.

The Italian carrier for the Group presents endless opportunities, for this is a country that it struggled to crack into for an extended period due to increased competition.

Away from the United States, there are also expectations of greater expansion into Asian markets, including Japan, which is driven once more by the airline’s partnership with Lufthansa and its upcoming membership in the Star Alliance.

Finding ways to leverage its membership in this Alliance, as well as its relationship with the Lufthansa Group, which is expected to increase to a majority stake, is enormous for the airline’s prospects.

Ultimately, while its focus with its narrowbody planes still sits on domestic and European services, the understanding remains that the big bucks are in long-haul international flying.

While these markets are highly competitive for ITA Airways, they’re also highly rewarding if executed correctly. The next handful of years will be pivotal for the continued development of ITA.
