Air India is currently undergoing a significant turnaround of its business and a focus on fleet renewal efforts.
The Indian flag carrier placed orders with Airbus and Boeing in 2023 to contribute to renewal efforts moving forward; however, the airline has made a bold comment regarding future orders.
Speaking with Reuters, airline CEO Campbell Wilson, tasked with turning around the bruised airline’s fortunes, confirmed future fleet decisions regarding Boeing.
His comments noted that any further commitments to Boeing aircraft would not occur at this stage. A bold decision as the airline says it would prefer to wait to see how Boeing rebuilds first.
The last half-decade has been turbulent and unforgiving for the American planemaker. Many wrong decisions have harmed operations and finances.
As a result, delivery delays, trust issues, supply chain woes, and other problems have become more complicated. The delays have caused airlines such as Air India to consider their position with the planemaker more than ever.
Wilson stated that they would not commit to anything else until they knew that the product they would receive would be of the highest standard and that they had confidence in it.

Furthermore, Wilson also argued that he wouldn’t want Boeing to offer a product if the manufacturer wasn’t confident in its offering to the Indian carrier.
While Boeing remains part of the problem, aircraft woes aren’t isolated. Air India says that every supplier it works with has issues that have made acquiring aircraft challenging.
The Big Air India Orders
Much discussion surrounds the Indian carrier’s position with Boeing because of the colossal aircraft orders placed in the last two years, which have been done to elevate the bruised company.
Air India has hundreds upon hundreds of aircraft on order. However, these are just the units that can be considered firm. Many of the contracts that have been signed also include options that can be activated later.
More often than not, airlines will look to add options as cover for the future if they see that demand can be met with additional units. Air India is a company in one of the fastest-growing markets worldwide and thus has a lot of demand to capture moving forward.

Aviation groups expect conditions at Boeing to improve over the coming years. If these problems disappeared, Air India would likely be confident enough to proceed with new aircraft purchases. For now, however, it remains wary.
This colossal order book will likely continue growing, but maybe not as quickly as the airline initially expected when it initiated turnaround endeavours.
The pace at which the turnaround can occur, especially fleet renewal attempts, will depend on how Boeing can improve its fortunes and focus on increasing the quality of its aircraft.
