An Air New Zealand Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Air New Zealand has unveiled plans to begin seasonal service to Seoul Incheon from Auckland using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The service resumption will occur on 28 October 2024, with 40,000 seats to operate across the period the flight is operational, with flights ending on 29 March 2025.

130 flights will be operated between the two countries in a vote of confidence to the Asian market that will have enhanced connectivity to New Zealand.

The flag carrier of New Zealand says that Korea has always been important but not always the most logical to return to as a market until now.

70,000 arrivals came from Korea across the year ending June 2024, making it the sixth-largest visitor market for New Zealand. The recommencement of flying from the flag carrier will be hugely important.

During the five-month period of flying, thrice-weekly flights will depart for Seoul, and passenger and cargo operations will be prioritized.

Air New Zealand highlights 2000 tonnes carried in the same period last year, with fresh produce such as blueberries, lamb, and avocados an integral part of those flights.

The expectation is that levels will remain very similar and, if not better, freight rates transported between the two cities over the upcoming five months.

Air New Zealand has faced heightened competition across key markets in recent years, which has affected its financials. However, such moves are a vote of confidence that the company is still forward-thinking and believes there’s room for growth.

Much of the competition came from North America, with recent financial reports from the airline stating that as airlines from this region increased flying across the Pacific, they felt the negative ramifications.

To celebrate the recommencement of flights, the company has also announced sale fares, which will be available until September 30 unless they are sold out prior. They will not be available across all dates but rather select periods.
