A United Airlines Boeing 757 arrives into Los Angeles

United Airlines has published its second-quarter results for 2024, allowing the airline to discuss its future for the remainder of the year.

The major U.S. carrier expects its mainline fleet to jump towards almost 1,000 aircraft as aircraft deliveries continue, albeit at a delayed rate.

As part of the forecast, the airline doesn’t plan on taking delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets in the third quarter. However, it is hopeful that four units will arrive in the fourth quarter.

The company hopes to have 75 total 787 Dreamliner aircraft in its fleet by the end of 2024. These estimates align with the respective manufacturer’s current expectations for delivery dates.

737 MAX deliveries are expected to grow steadily. The airline expects 12 deliveries in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth quarter, bringing the end-of-the-year total to 195.

The continued delivery of A321neo family aircraft will make this one of the largest growers across 2024 as the company moves to a targeted 30 units by year’s end.

The fleet will see reductions with the role of the A319 and A320, reducing from 170 at the beginning of the year to 157 by the end of the year.

Thanks to the removal of more than 50-seat aircraft throughout the calendar year, total aircraft operations across its regional division will be reduced overall.

The airline’s operations and finances remain a cautious tale internally. This cautionary approach comes as it understands that overcapacity has become a significant problem for other major U.S. carriers. More companies in the region are expected to respond by making necessary cuts.

While the second quarter saw record profits, United Airlines expects an overall lower-than-expected profit for the third quarter to reflect the challenges. The summer season, however, will remain a strong point for United as it enjoys record levels of demand spurred on by more than 3 million people passing through TSA checkpoints in one day, recorded on July 7, 2024.

In the coming months, United Airlines will make further adjustments to its schedule to cope with overcapacity and oversupply. However, despite this, CEO Scott Kirby said that throughout the second quarter, it still managed to add international and domestic flights year over year as demand has not dropped.
