Etihad Airways continues ramping up capacity towards the United States by deploying its Airbus A380 to New York JFK.
The world’s largest passenger plane will serve New York JFK from Abu Dhabi in what the airline says is just in time for the summer. Demand between the locations is expected to soar over the next few months, a lucrative time for airlines to boost capacity.
Operating as flight EY1, the aircraft touched down in New York on Monday, 22 April 2024. The routine flight departs Abu Dhabi at 0255 and arrives stateside at 0915. The return leg, which operates as EY2, departs New York at 1430 and arrives at Etihad’s hub at 1130 the following day.
The service between the locations will work alongside a daily flight operated by the smaller yet reliable 787-9 Dreamliner.

Etihad Airways prides itself on the products offered to customers aboard the Airbus A380. The aircraft features the notable Residence, an iconic three-room suite in the sky, as described by the carrier. Additionally, The Residence is meant to offer an “unparalleled flying room suite.”
Ultimately, The Residence epitomises what the Airbus A380 can offer airlines. It is a large canvas on which design teams can collaborate with their customers to create something special.
We’re thrilled to introduce our A380 experience to New York, confident that our guests will relish the exceptional onboard journey. Whether travelling in Economy, Business, First Class, or our luxurious three-room suite, The Residence, passengers can expect unparalleled service from our award-winning crew.

Airbus A380 Returns With Etihad Airways
The Airbus A380 heading to New York is much bigger than just an upgrade of a service. Such a moment showcases the major change from Etihad’s stance on the aircraft in the early 2020s.
During the height of the pandemic, Etihad Airways believed the Airbus A380 had no place within its fleet. As a result of this stance, Etihad decided to retire the aircraft permanently.
However, as demand surged and amid difficulties acquiring next-generation aircraft on time, Etihad was left to ponder. The reactivation of the aircraft became a real possibility, even as a short-term solution.
Etihad Airways outlined plans to return the aircraft slowly to service with a deployment on the in-demand Abu Dhabi to Heathrow route. Now, with the A380 being deployed to New York, it showcases the need still for a plane on this scale within the company.
