LATAM has announced an order for five Boeing 787s and will become the largest operator of the 787 series in Latin America

LATAM has ordered five additional Boeing 787 Dreamliners to expand its commitment to the popular widebody.

LATAM and Boeing celebrated the deal through press releases.

Boeing 787 Selected By LATAM

LATAM is more than just a repeat customer of the Dreamliner; it has become the largest series operator in Latin America thanks to the latest order.

Over the coming years, with the latest commitment and already existing portfolio of the Dreamliner LATAM forecasts, the total will reach 46 units.

The investment is substantial as LATAM looks to bring an efficient, modern and sustainable fleet to South America that can be enjoyed worldwide.

A Move Towards The GEnx Engine

The Boeing 787s will be equipped with the GEnx engines by GE Aerospace as part of the newest commitment. This decision makes LATAM the first airline in South America to have these engines equipped on its aircraft, too.

The GEnx engine has more than 50 million flight hours since it entered service over a decade ago in 2001. The industry-leading GEnx is said to be the fastest-selling high-thrust engine in company history. To date, thousands of units are now in service with a substantial backlog as well.

GE Aerospace is pleased to welcome the LATAM Airlines Group to the GEnx engine family. As LATAM group continues to expand and grow its 787 Dreamliner fleet, we look forward to supporting their continued success every step of the way.

Kathy MacKenzie, Vice President, GE Commercial Programs for GE Aerospace.

LATAM’s Existing Boeing 787 Operation

Across the Group, there are 313 in-service aircraft, including a substantial commitment to the Boeing 787 series.

The Group flies the 787-8 and the 787-9 with 33 units. The Boeing 787-8s see 8 units in service with 1 in storage. These aircraft average an age of 10.1 years.

The company also flies 23 787-9s, averaging a significantly less age, coming in at 6.7 years.

Comments From Executives

These actions are fully aligned with the commitment to sustainability and brings LATAM closer to the goal of becoming a carbon neutral group by 2050. The incorporation of GEnx engines is a decision that provides greater flexibility and options for the expansion of the long-range fleet. Furthermore, increasing the Boeing 787 fleet size will allow the group to operate with two different engine models, known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact, in a complementary way.

Ramiro Alfonsín, LATAM Airlines Group S.A CFO.

The 787 Dreamliner is perfectly suited to support LATAM group’s sustainability and operations goals with its exceptional performance, flexible route capability and enhanced passenger comfort. We look forward to partnering with LATAM group as it connects Latin America with the world and makes a difference in the communities it serves.

Mike Wilson, vice president of Latin America and Caribbean Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
