Boeing has announced another win for its upcoming 777-8 Freighter, the next generation of the planemaker’s freight programme and part of the 777X family.

Unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow, MSC Air Cargo has committed to five of the jets under a contract previously listed as from an unidentified customer in the Boeing order backlog.

MSC Air Cargo’s First 777-8F Order

Announced on 21 July 2026, the agreement sees MSC Air Cargo become a new customer for the 777-8F and place its first commitment to the next generation of freight aircraft emerging.

MSC Air Cargo is buying five 777-8Fs to cement its position as an all-Boeing fleet, and it currently operates the 777-200Fs. As a result, the 777-8F marks the next step up and will drive down costs.

The carrier, which operates as the air arm for the shipping giant MSC, is moving quickly to bet on the long-term resilience of cargo demand.

With this order, we are investing in the long-term future of MSC Air Cargo and in the customers we serve. The 777-8 Freighter gives us the efficiency, range and capacity to serve our customers reliably for years to come, while advancing our commitment to more sustainable operations. It is the right aircraft for the next stage of our growth.

Jannie Davel, CEO of MSC Air Cargo

Boeing has since been pitching the 777-8F to customers as the most capable twin-engine freighter on the market, with technologies taken from the 777X passenger family and adopted onto a freight model.

Boeing and MSC Air Cargo announced that the fast-growing air cargo operator has purchased five 777-8 Freighters. The previously unidentified order is MSC Air Cargo’s first for the 777-8 Freighter.

Additionally, taking the learnings of the 777F and bringing them to a new platform means that, for companies like MSC Air Cargo, it’s a profile that has become a natural fit. With e-commerce and time-sensitive logistical operations growing, executives flag the need to continue moving strong volumes on long-haul lanes.

Linking these sea or land hubs to key air gateways is imperative to MSC’s success moving forward. Therefore, while the 777Fs currently play a pivotal role, the new-generation 777-8F with its range and payload capabilities enables a strong replacement to emerge and support the next wave of the business.

Another Order For The Upcoming 777-8 Freighter

For Boeing, another commitment to its young but fast-growing 777-8F is a solid step in the right direction. This freighter variant launched in 2022 with a headline deal from Qatar Airways.

Since its launch, the model has attracted commitments from businesses such as Cargolux, Lufthansa Cargo, ANA Cargo, and even Ethiopian Airlines. All these, among others, have meant the jet has booked more than 80 orders, and MSC Air Cargo becomes the third in Europe to sign up.

Brad McMullen, the senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing at Boeing, said the MSC order is a vote of confidence in what it’s doing for the freight sector with the 777-8F and validates the broader cargo outlook that has been put forward over the years.

The 777-8F, per McMullen, will become not just the new era of freight flying globally but also the most efficient aircraft in its class, and mean for MSC Air Cargo the connection between hubs and key international locations at a fraction of the cost.

Timing the contract announcement at the Farnborough Airshow, even after CEO Kelly Ortberg said orders were not to be the biggest priorities, gives the new 777-8F a chance to take centre stage and for MSC Air Cargo to flex its wings and show the ambition for the coming years.
