Fiji Airways has announced the complete cancellation of one of its flagship, longer-haul Airbus A350 flights from its Nadi hub to Dallas.

The decision, cited as part of cost-cutting measures and in response to soaring fuel prices following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, has pushed thinner margins to the brink of instability.

For an airline like Fiji Airways with a smaller network and fleet base, it’s imperative that it has a stable operation, and when economic volatility hits, decisions must be made, even if viewed as temporary, in order to protect margins and remain present in the industry.

Fiji Airways is serving the route as FJ890 with departure from Nadi at 2215 and a 1650 arrival into Dallas Fort Worth, home of American Airlines and a fellow oneworld partner, enabling onward connections across the American network.

The return flight FJ891 is scheduled to depart Dallas-Fort Worth at 2245 and, due to time zones, arrive in Nadi two days later at 0520, a morning arrival that allows onward travel to Australia and New Zealand or via its morning regional flight options.

The final service following this confirmed cancellation is now scheduled for 5 September 2206 and ultimately comes as no surprise, given the initial three flights per week offered.

Fiji Airways Previously Cut Flights, Not Cancelled

Just weeks ago, Fiji Airways trimmed its Nadi-to-Dallas service, reducing the three weekly flights to two for the period from 5 May 2026 through 17 June 2026.

However, now, just 10 days later, the Nadi-based airline has confirmed that the drop to two weekly flights will instead result in the complete cancellation of this service and of one of its newest flights, which joined the network in December 2024.

The reduction resulted in a noticeable drop in seat capacity to Dallas while ensuring that other locations in the United States remained available despite ongoing economic uncertainty.

Furthermore, the reduction in Dallas capacity follows reductions in Brisbane flights, reflecting crucial network changes to protect the bottom line and safeguard the network. As a result, cuts are made to prioritise cities with strong demand, with the most vital markets given priority.

Fiji Airways already faces strong competition from legacy airlines that bypass the Pacific Islands with nonstop service, such as fellow oneworld partner Qantas, as well as competitors like Delta and United Airlines.

The battle among these US legacy giants means expansion has to be carefully curated, but equally, when extreme volatility hits, strong decisions have to be made. Unfortunately, it often involves a complete scaling back of service to preserve other locations.
