Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - February 5, 2023: Singapore Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplane at Kuala Lumpur Airport in Malaysia.

Singapore Airlines is targeting the launch of a new service to Chiang Mai, linking the Island State with its home of Changi.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), the regulator said that it had met with the station manager in Bangkok of Singapore Airliens to discuss preparations to launch the new flights.

For Singapore Airlines, the prospective service launch, which remains in the works, is part of its commitment to better connect Southeast Asia, where strong demand has been flagged by the Bangkok Post.

Singapore Airlines recently expanded its service to Bangkok, complementing its existing flights to Phuket.

Scoot Flies On The Changi -Chiang Mai Route

While Singapore Airlines has a strong presence across Thailand, the Group’s low-cost airline, Scoot, operates nonstop service on the Singapore Changi-Chiang Mai route, utilising the Airbus A321neo.

The winter peak is when the A321neo is used, with additional seats over the base model, allowing the airline to increase service to up to daily, sometimes even operating double daily.

During the summer season, the A320neo is used on the service; however, frequency drops to daily, indicating strong demand for the airline.

Singapore Airlines Focuses on Expansion

Singapore Airlines and its Asian peers, such as AirAsia, Thai Airways, and Vietnam Airlines, have, in recent months, publicly placed greater emphasis on expansion into secondary cities beyond hubs.

These tier-2 cities enable airlines to capture rising demand in unserved or underserved markets, where demand remains strong and tourism booms during seasonal periods, such as island destinations.

For airlines, these markets are lucrative, mainly because they allow them to bypass saturated primary hubs like Bangkok, where securing slots to compete can be harder.

Singapore Airlines can leverage its growing single-aisle fleet to make these markets within reach, while partnering with its low-cost division, Scoot, to cover all profitable areas.
