Airbus A320neo family aircraft in production

The A320neo has always been a popular aircraft, but the last handful of days have seen nonstop action for this single-aisle type as 2025 comes to a close.

CALC or China Aircraft Leasing Group has become the latest customer to commit to the single-aisle jet to enhance its backlog of new commercial aeroplanes.

The lessor confirmed that it’ll commit to 30 A320neo aircraft in a direct move that not only signals its intent for future growth but also allows it to enhance its partnership with Airbus on new aircraft.

These planes, which have been ordered, will be delivered through to the early to mid 2030s, and do also include conversion rights to other variants within the A320 family, allowing for maximum flexibility if required, especially with larger models available.

CALC’s deep understanding of the market and what its customers demand is a solid endorsement of the A320neo Family. This commitment reinforces their strength as a lessor with the most efficient, versatile, and in-demand single-aisle aircraft for their customers.

With lessors having the flexibility to adjust their order book, as CALC aims to do, they can respond more quickly to passenger trends among customers likely to take on these aircraft and change the mix of their backlogs.

For example, the A320neo family is the planmakers’ best-selling aircraft type year on year. With derivatives such as the A321XLR, these planes can offer not just additional capacity over the base A320neo model but also greater range.

As for CALC, it’s no stranger to the Airbus aircraft portfolio; it has been a long-time customer, with its first deal in 2012. It later became the first Chinese lessor to place a direct bulk order with the company.

The Executive Director and CEO of CALC, Mike Pon, said that the latest order reinforces CALC’s strategic vision for sustainable growth and demonstrates confidence in global aviation.

CALC Joins Air China For A320neo

CALC’s decision to commit to additional A320neos brings the total to almost 200 aircraft already delivered to customers worldwide. Still, it also represents a busy day for Airbus, for the second day running.

The latest commitment follows Air China’s sizeable contract for new commercial aircraft, and again the A320neo, which has been enjoying a fantastic end to 2025, setting it up for what the manufacturer would hope is another successful 12 months ahead.

Air China’s commitment, valued at around USD 9.5 billion at list prices, included the purchase of 60 Airbus A320neo aircraft, with deliveries over four years from 2028 to 2032.

This isn’t the first A320neo order this week, which will also be delivered during this period, with Spring Airlines and Juneyo Airlines also disclosing that they would grow their commitment to the next-generation of Airbus planes.

With delivery slots being rapidly snapped up, airlines need to get in sooner rather than later to secure their capacity moving into the 2030s. Unfortunately, not every airline can commit to aircraft so far in advance, as this alone poses risks, forcing them to turn to the leasing market.
