Embraer is continuing to move ahead with a new aircraft that’ll rival Airbus and Boeing.

However, in a Bloomberg News report driven by Danny Lee, the planemaker’s Chief Executive Officer, Arjan Meijer, said they will not be rushed into a decision.

Instead, the Brazilian planemaker will take the time to fully understand the best steps forward to make the right decision that’ll take the business forward rather than backwards, rather than making a poor investment.

Investing in the launch of a new aircraft program is no simple move; it requires substantial funding and, on Embraer’s part, valuable resources that would be taken away from other avenues.

However, as Embraer finds ways to deepen market share worldwide and to push its currently in-production E2 program, there has been an appetite among many for the launch of a new plane.

In an industry where the A320neo and 737 MAX largely dominate the single-aisle space, there’s no genuine alternative in markets where the E2 thrives.

While COAMC would argue it’s pitching the C919 to customers as the Airbus or Boeing alternative, there are clear complications with this aircraft and the broader planemaker that mean its widespread adoption, especially in Western markets, has yet to occur.

So ultimately, while there remains significant interest in Embraer moving ahead with some form of an alternative, the business is yet to be in a position to feel comfortable developing such a jet, and a decision is also some time away.

Not Fresh News At Embraer

In 2024, there was also strong reporting that the Brazilian planemaker was quietly discussing the possibility of moving ahead with the launch of a new aircraft.

The Wall Street Journal broke the news at the time, noting that a new plane would directly compete with Airbus and Boeing’s single-aisle offerings.

However, on the same day that reporting emerged in the Wall Street Journal, Embraer officials said they weren’t planning to move forward with an A320neo or 737 MAX competitor.

Instead, the laser focus remained on the existing aircraft portfolio, which has been developed over a multi-decade period and indeed increased the backlog for the E2 program.

In a shared statement, Embraer said it has the capabilities to produce a new narrowbody aircraft should it want to, potentially igniting the fire that, at some point, this would be an endeavour it seeks to pursue.

For the moment, however, studies will continue, feasibility inquiries will be pursued, communication with customers will be maintained, and internal discussions will take place to understand the best direction for the business moving into the 2030s and beyond.

If Embraer were to move ahead with a MAX and NEO competitor/replacement by the 2030s, this could finally give airlines a third model in the single-aisle family, meaning allowing them to order planes sooner instead of dealing with Airbus and Boeing’s long wait times due to extensive backlogs.

  1. Embraer is a good choice or third choice in Western dominated aeroplane dominated market.Especially for startups. They are making good planes even European countries are their clients & it’s a sign of organization expertise excellence.

  2. It’s those wait times which make this market so uncompetitive. Embraer, with its established and happy customer base, would stand a good chance. Unlike the Chinese and Russian offerings, which carry some uncertainties and a heavy political burden.
