Boeing has scored big, with another major new aircraft order for 737 MAX and 787 from Canadian carrier WestJet.

WestJet, with the newest purchase, is growing its firm order book to 123 planes, with 67 aircraft being purchased as part of growth plans.

The Canadian carrier has made its intentions clear to expand not just on the domestic front but also across its international operations and next-generation aircraft from the American planemaker.

As part of the latest commitment, which was listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website in June, 67 aircraft are spread across the high-capacity 737-10 model and the 787-9 Dreamliner.

  • 60 of the high-capacity Boeing 737-10 have been ordered
  • 7 of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners have been ordered

While the order will include the landmark 67 commitments, the airline also has a further 29 options available, bringing the total figure much closer to the 100 mark in a landmark moment for the Canadian aviation sector.

Included in the contract are therefore options for 25 of the high-capacity 737-10 and four more of the 787-9 should WestJet choose to activate these at a later date, depending on how demand progresses.

The deal also puts WestJet as the carrier in Canada with the largest order book, doubling its commitment to the 787 Dreamliner, meaning growth can really take off with more long-haul routes, creating jobs and exciting travel opportunities for passengers.

As for the 737-10, there’s much excitement about what the high-capacity model will be able to bring with now 107 orders for this jet, allowing it to get more passengers aboard every aircraft, but the plane still benefits from cost savings driven by the MAX being part of the next-generation fleet provided by Boeing.

WestJet remains one of the youngest airlines, based on average age, and since its inception in 1996 with a fleet of Boeing 737s, it has consistently strengthened its reliance on this popular single-aisle model.

A Busy Week For Boeing

The landmark announcement from WestJet is one of many that Boeing has revealed over the last week.

Firstly, confirmation arrived that Air New Zealand was moving ahead with more orders for the 787-10 in a bid to elevate its commitment to the high-capacity model.

These 787s will help strengthen flying towards in-demand long-haul cities, with the airline’s Chief Executive pointing to North American destinations as a key focus.

Additionally, Macquarie AirFinance was revealed as a customer for another deal, including the 737 MAX, which saw 30 units added to the backlog.

The leading aircraft lessor is looking to significantly develop its portfolio of new commercial aircraft from Boeing as it deepens its relationship with airlines, providing fleet solutions.
