ITA Airways is formally progressing into a new era thanks to the approval by the Board of Directors of a 2026-2030 Business Plan.

The plan set to be implemented over the next five years includes what the Italian carrier says are three fundamental strategic pillars.

Firstly, the strengthening of the business will be paramount, alongside a focus on increasing the competitive position across the world.

ITA Airways says it wants to establish itself as the reference carrier for the country it calls home, Italy, by innovating and offering efficient day-to-day operations.

The carrier aims to deliver what it says is an exceptional service to both business and leisure travellers while prioritising economic, social and environmental sustainability driven by expert management of available resources.

What will also occur will be the integration with Lufthansa Group, set to formally take the Italian airline into this new era, as the fourth largest airline group in the world.

An advantage of having this backing is that it gives ITA Airways greater ability to be competitive in new and emerging markets with additional support that would not have been possible.

ITA Airways also says that the plan places great emphasis on network development, which includes the entire substantial fleet, which has already been growing well since conception.

So What’s Next For ITA Airways?

ITA Airways says that in the next five years, emphasis will mostly be put on the development of its long-haul routes, with Rome Fiumicino to play a key role in that.

The airline is targeting North America, South America, Asia, and Africa destinations while tapping into markets that it sees as having demand. Still, it may be underserved and require better global connectivity.

Away from long-haul flying, expansion has also been targeted across Europe and the Mediterranean. Partnerships and the place within the Lufthansa Group will substantially aid ITA Airways in making this possible.

The company says a lot of attention has been placed on finding ways to innovate aboard its aircraft with new digital solutions and more that focus on the environment and social sustainability while still providing the best possible experience for those that choose to fly the national airline.

Fleet will be pivotal to all of this happening, and as a result, the plan shows a requirement for new additional aircraft to join the fleet from 2026 onwards, and certainly an emphasis on long-haul planes.

As part of the strategy, the airline needs to introduce new models while phasing out some of the older ones. Hopefully, by 2030, it will reach 100 aircraft and a complete reliance on next-generation aircraft.

To help power the new routes and fleet, a program will be launched to develop the staff, ensuring alignment with the business’s direction.
