A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, to be used by Alaska Airlines thanks to Hawaiian Airlines for international service

Hot off confirming international expansion to Seoul Incheon, Alaska Airlines has set its sights on European services.

The carrier, now with Hawaiian Airlines’ assets, aims to launch services to Europe in 2026, a signal of intent for the future of this long-established airline now part of a broader Group.

Speaking at an event in New York, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci confirmed that European destinations are on the radar, with an expected launch sometime in 2026.

The catch is that these new flights cannot take place on Alaska Airlines’ aircraft because of the lack of widebody aircraft in the mainline division. The company operates with only single-aisle jets, so how will these long-haul flights to Europe be made possible?

Following approval to take on Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska Airlines will leverage the newest part of its Group’s widebody fleet to access more international markets. It sees Seattle as the perfect launching pad.

Alaska Airlines has already confirmed its intent to offer 12 international nonstop destinations from Seattle with widebody aircraft by 2030, driven by Hawaiian Airlines. Tokyo and Seoul are the first two locations of the 12 launching this year.

The remaining 10 locations have naturally not been disclosed, let alone figured out. However, the intent to begin flying as far as Europe now emphasises how global Alaska Airlines looks as they aim to solidify themselves as part of the new big four in the United States, especially on the West Coast.

The 787’s Importance For Alaska Airlines

The 787 Dreamliner will play an instrumental role in making these new international routes possible in the long term. This latest addition to the Hawaian Airlines business will continue to be delivered in the coming years.

As more units enter service, Alaska Airlines will leverage this next-generation aircraft and move them towards Seattle to help the broader group achieve network connectivity and compete with more established airlines that are part of the big three in the United States.

Seattle becomes key to achieving these alongside the Dreamliner and offers greater connectivity across the Pacific Ocean towards Asia and then across the Atlantic towards long-haul European destinations.

Fundamentally, these changes that are being witnessed will not see Hawaii disappear as a global hub. However, the realisation beckoning that the role the country and national airline may have once wanted to have will not be possible.

Now, under the wings of Alaska Airlines, there are fresh possibilities once more, and Seattle’s leverage to act as a global international hub in either direction with the Hawaiian fleet is a match many believe is made in heaven.

Hawaii won’t be out of the picture because the routes do not originate here. Alaska feels it’ll be quite the opposite, with a great perspective on feeding traffic from the country onward and also to it.
