Qantas has confirmed its first A321XLR will arrive in the coming months as part of ongoing fleet renewal efforts.
Qantas Domestic is expected to welcome the first next-generation A321XLR from June this year.
The arrival of this aircraft aligns with the expectation that seven new aircraft will arrive in the second half of this current financial year.
Thus, the plane will join the expected arrival of more A220s and the low-cost division’s continued commitment to Airbus single-aisle jets that are also being delivered.
The Qantas Aircraft Delays
While Qantas has a substantial order book accumulated through several noteworthy orders across recent years, the Group is equally battling delivery delays.
Qantas said its first A321XLR was expected to be delivered three months later to Qantas Domestic, with an early-2025 delivery. That is now not possible, and a mid-2025 delivery is more likely.

To cope with the persistent delays, the airline has retained existing aircraft longer while eyeing the established leasing market to ensure it has no significant operational problems.
Manufacturing delays have delayed Qantas’s A321XLR delivery. However, Qantas is not the only airline to experience this; other airlines also forecast delays.
The A321XLR Benefits
With delivery of the first A321XLR inching closer, there are undoubtedly many benefits.
The Airbus single-aisle jet is five metres longer than the 737-800s the airline is replacing. Thus, these jets will be configured to seat 200 passengers in a two-class configuration. The makeup will include 20 business class seats and 180 in economy.

Ultimately, this will equate to a 15% increase in the overall capacity; Qantas notes that despite a 15% increase, no space will be lost between seats as the airline ensures customer satisfaction levels remain high.
Additionally, the XLR can fly 3,000km further than the 737-800s, which opens new possibilities for South East Asia and Pacific Island flying while boosting capacity on essential domestic services.
Qantas is therefore incredibly excited about bringing this next-generation single-aisle jet into its fleet.
