American Airlines is expecting 2025 to be rougher than 2024, with profit levels below what was expected.
The major U.S. carrier is forecasting increased costs as it battles rising contractual requirements with employees following the signing of 2024 agreements.
Many airlines have faced similar challenges over the last two years, with employees striking to secure better contracts to combat the rising cost of living.
While strike action was seen as a last resort, the implications of operational suspensions were often enough to ensure that the airline came to the table and met the requirements of the employees seeking better pay.
The signing prevented further operational disruption; however, it also meant that costs across the airline business rose dramatically after the new contracts were secured.
Many contracts coming into effect this year mean that American Airlines needs to adjust its expectations and find ways to balance the increased costs while still driving a profit.
Struggles are expected to show in the first quarter, as American Airlines expects a bigger-than-expected first-quarter loss. This is contrary to other U.S. carriers, which have also published their expectations for the new year.
Things outside of the airline’s control, such as fluctuating fuel prices, have been something the industry has continued to struggle with across more than just the last year. What hasn’t helped is that prices have increased in recent times.
American Airlines VS Other U.S. Airlines
Comparing American Airlines to some of its biggest competitors, United Airlines and Delta, has highlighted the significant gap between them.
American Airlines has faced more substantial challenges over the last twelve months, which have been highlighted through shareholder views. However, its jumps have not been as high as those of its competitors.
The carrier faced a year of relationship mending on many different accounts. In contrast, its competitors didn’t face something similar but were able to advance further and make groundbreaking announcements to set themselves up nicely for the future.
