Air Canada will rapidly adjust its single-aisle business in the coming years to further develop its growth.

The 2024 Investor Day presentation revealed the latest developments, featuring 161 slides discussing the airline’s future and operating conditions.

One of the landmark changes will see a radically different operation and fleet composition within the Air Canada Group moving forward as part of efforts to streamline and grow all relevant company divisions.

Air Canada has announced that its fleet plans will change over the long term with a complete restructuring of its 737 MAX portfolio. The airline will not necessarily say goodbye to the MAX jets but will move away from the mainline brand.

Instead, the flag carrier has announced that by 2028, the aircraft will be transitioned to the Rouge brand to meet growing demand, renewal efforts and more.

Air Canada labels the decision also in response to the growing need to meet leisure destinations for a brand that was ultimately launched in 2012 to offer missions such as these under a more affordable nature.

The fleet restructuring also comes at an important time for Rouge; all things considered, while this company has an adequate fleet, it is also a fleet nearing the end of its suitable operational life where efficiency is optimal.

These aircraft types are now ageing quite substantially, and they are all Airbus. As a result, the Group knows it must start considering a means to renew the fleet and move forward in a positive direction.

Air Canada firmly believes that the aircraft will be pivotal to the long-term future of Rouge and help it compete with other airlines moving forward in the leisure and low-cost competitive market.

Moreover, transferring the MAX jets will facilitate the opening of a new West Coast base in Vancouver, which Air Canada says will enable greater coast-to-coast connectivity options.

Furthermore, the 737 MAX’s capabilities will also allow for greater routes to launch as the Boeing single-aisle is described as a more capable aircraft with a more consistent seating product.

Ultimately, the fleet renewal efforts are just one of the many changes announced at the flag carrier as part of long-term optimisation efforts.
