Air New Zealand continues to experience a turbulent period, and the carrier has published recent performance metrics detailing a view of its business.

The New Zealand flag carrier said its capacity has reduced by around two percentage points yearly as it battles the complications that have long plagued the company.

Much of the recent capacity reduction, however, relates to the maintenance troubles that have hurt its more next-generation planes from Airbus and Boeing.

Ironically, these aircraft were meant to improve the airline, and while on paper, they will outperform older planes, they’ve been associated with many issues since entering service.

Air New Zealand’s ability to serve its network has become difficult due to the A320neo family and related Pratt & Whitney engine difficulties, as well as the Rolls Royce supply chain and durability concerns that affect the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.

The company stated that available seat kilometres were primarily cut across its long-haul network, driven by those 787 groundings and maintenance concerns that stem from uncertainty surrounding the future.

Air New Zealand has said it doesn’t expect things to improve in 2025 and that improvements should only begin in 2026. This means the carrier will also need to navigate turbulence throughout the next year.

While maintenance-related challenges remain one of the more relevant reasons why Air New Zealand has seen its business affected recently, this is not the only reason.

Another avenue of concern for the carrier has been the battle in recent years with increased competition, which has affected its ability to perform adequately across key markets.

Notably, much of the competition Air New Zealand faces comes from Transpacific operations, with United Airlines and American Airlines increasing their presence and providing fantastic connectivity options.

Air New Zealand has just been unable to keep up with this and state that the intense competition is still impacting its business compared to the previous period.

While North America remains a rather bleak area, there have also been improvements, at the very least through to Asia, thanks to improved yields over the previous year.
