British Airways has announced a major multi-million-pound investment in its engineering facility at Cardiff Airport to prepare it for future requirements.

The UK flag carrier says that the investment will be fundamental in increasing overall efficiency across the company while also ensuring maintenance operations can occur.

One significant change will be the base’s ability to serve more aircraft than is currently possible. For the longest period, the Cardiff base has only been able to serve 777 and 787 aircraft types.

However, thanks to the investment and the expansion of one of the three maintenance bays, there will now be the possibility of facilitating work on the larger long-haul aircraft of the Airbus A350.

Since its delivery, the Airbus A350 has become a pivotal part of the UK carrier’s long-haul network, which will continue for many decades.

Our Welsh engineering base is an integral part of our maintenance operation, and this investment, as part of our wider maintenance strategy, will ensure that British Airways Engineering Wales continues to play a key role for many years to come. The expanded facility provides us with greater flexibility and control over our Heavy Maintenance activity on both the Boeing and Airbus long-haul fleets, ensuring more efficient planning and execution.

Andy Best, Chief Technical Officer

Once the work is completed, British Airways Maintenance Cardiff, or BAMC, will expand from one to two fully flexible bays. This will allow more complex and detailed maintenance work to be conducted here.

This investment is part of what the carrier described as a transformative change being implemented, which is worth £7bn. Work is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed one year later, in 2026.

British Airways says that the investment is fantastic news not just for the airline but will also pave the way for further growth at the Cardiff site and is a testament to the important work conducted by the highly skilled workforce at the location.
