Garuda Indonesia has experienced a turbulent last few years. However, it believes it’s moving in a positive direction for the future, with a greater focus on profitability and expansion.

The Indonesian carrier is appointing a new chief executive officer to guide it into future years. It is also planning the exciting growth of its fleet to align itself with targets and competition.

As part of those plans, the airline wants to continue restoring the national airline to its proper position, where people can be proud to fly and see it worldwide.

While Garuda Indonesia doesn’t fit in the same position as Air India, the idea of bringing a national carrier back to its status also occurs at the Indian flag carrier.

Looking ahead, while much stabilising of the business must first occur, the hope would be to grow the business upwards to 150 aircraft, which would represent significant growth over time.

Having 150 aircraft will help Garuda Indonesia expand its international network, serve new markets, and increase capacity towards existing locations. It will also make its operation more cost-efficient as older planes will be retired.

However, moving towards this goal is a little more challenging than for some airlines attempting turnaround measures, as Garuda Indonesia has been losing money of late.

For the first nine months of 2023, there was a reported pre-tax loss of USD 103 million. Meanwhile, its three-month ending in September 2024 also saw a net loss of 29.6 million.

Garuda has cited factors such as the change in foreign exchange rates as reasons why its business hasn’t been operating optimally for some time.

Despite these losses, which ultimately need to be addressed under new leadership, the carrier is hopeful that it’ll be able to navigate this turbulence and enable expansion as it desires.

Even at the end of 2023, Garuda Indonesia announced its intent to expand its fleet in the coming years. The business did see steady improvement, and executives hoped it’d only be able to move ahead more positively.

Over the long term, Garuda Indonesia’s focus appears clearer than ever and involves achieving increasingly specific pillars. These range from becoming profitable and having a sustainable probability to expanding the fleet and increasing its overall presence across international markets.
