Singapore Airlines has published its quarterly results with notable comments surrounding the increasing levels of competition across its route map.

The airline’s half-year net profits dropped by almost a staggering 50% to USD 561 million between April and September, down from the rough billion-dollar net profit recorded one year prior.

Demand continues to be a highlight for the company as it sees considerable bookings across its network looking into the future. While this remains unchanged year over year, and if anything is improving, other avenues are of greater concern.

Expenses rose quite a bit, with 14.4% increases across the board. Singapore Airlines cites the fluctuating nature of fuel prices alongside other required investments and general expenses rising in categories out of its control.

Rising expenses aren’t just impacting Singapore Airlines; this is an industry-wide problem that airlines are being forced to navigate. Unfortunately, for some, finding that optimal balance is harder than thought.

If airlines struggle to find that optimal balance, they often see slips in their profitability. Singapore Airlines is publicly warning that we should expect to see struggles around maintaining profitability for the long term.

While expenses have been rising equally, greater competition has also impacted Singapore Airlines’ typical performance.

Load factors did drop by over two percentage points year over year. While this isn’t a substantial drop worth being concerned about, it backs up the airline’s competition comments regarding its current operating environment.

Singapore Airlines has been and continues to be a staple within the industry, but evolving trends, new emerging airlines and others expanding at rapid rates put pressure on legacy carriers like the Changi-based one to continue thriving, and such setbacks are more than normal.

Travel demand certainly isn’t slowing down, and airlines away from Singapore have recognised this and jumped on the opportunity to secure additional aircraft and expand their route network.

As such, there’s more pressure on selling tickets and prices and also on recording significant profits every single quarter. While revenues for most operators reach record levels, it’s the balance that continues to be a talking point.
