Air India has officially commenced work on the upcoming MRO facility in Bengaluru as part of continued efforts to grow as a business.
The MRO facility, which focuses on the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul of critical assets, will be built on a 35-acre piece of land at Bangalore International Airport.
Air India has touted the upcoming facility as essential for the future of its Group and flying with a focus on it becoming a hub for the aircraft at the airlines that call Tata Group, the owners of Air India, home.
The facility will feature a hangar that can house narrow-body and wide-body aircraft under a single safe roof. Additional hangars will also be a priority, with a focus on a paint hangar as the airline looks to overhaul its livery.
SIA Engineering will also be a fundamental part of this new MRO facility, and Air India has signed an agreement to be the company’s strategic partner for development.
Air India is incredibly pleased with the progress and believes the quick turnaround is a milestone for Indian aviation and allows the facilities being built to match the incredible levels of growth being seen.
The airline’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, stated that the MRO facility will help build upon an existing platform to maintain the fleet in-house. Moreover, strengthening the Indian aviation ecosystem will also play a fundamental role.
The MRO facility will create 1,200 new jobs and support many other people through enhanced supply chains, among other things.
The Air India Turnaround
Since taking over Air India, Tata Group has invested significant money in the flag carrier to improve its fortunes.
Unfortunately, Air India’s last decade has been incredibly bleak despite being a flag carrier. It has a tainted brand image and accumulating losses.
However, when the Indian government finally sold its stake in the carrier, and Tata Group came in, the rebuilding missions commenced, and arguably one of the greatest turnarounds ever witnessed began.
Since the new ownership has walked through the door, such facilities have begun being constructed, new aircraft have been ordered, the cabin product has been updated, new technologies have been implemented, fresh branding has been added, and so much more has been added.
