SAS is entering a new era. The airline announced the successful completion of its restructuring, which led to the emergence of Chapter 11 in the US.
This restructuring was part of efforts to stabilise the business, with greater emphasis on sustainability and profitability, among other avenues.
Now, SAS will emerge genuinely into a new era with a greater focus on being competitive and, more importantly, financially robust with a limited risk of collapse.
As highlighted by SAS Forward, management has tirelessly worked to implement cost-cutting measures over recent years.
SAS Forward was unveiled some time ago as the comprehensive answer to the turnaround of the business from a financial standpoint, among other avenues.
As part of this plan, great focus was placed on the route network and fleet, with only profitable routes to stay. Much change was made to how aircraft were operated to ensure that its assets were being used in the best manner possible.
Building a sustainable future economically and from a day-to-day operations perspective was also essential for the company as part of the long-term focus.
More than 2 billion dollars of debt has been restructured in recent years, and many other elements of the business have seen widespread changes to ensure longevity.
These other changes have included costs, agreements with suppliers, and the adjustment of the future fleet and its current aircraft alongside other avenues that would typically be costly.
SAS knows it has a place within the industry; however, it is also aware that the European space is incredibly competitive, and restructuring has been essential to getting the airline back to basics.
As the airline group emerges, several positives are present, such as the highest-ever month of profitability, which was recorded as recently as July 2024. Furthermore, the airline is seeing staggering demand levels, with passengers increasing by 6.5% yearly.
Exiting restructuring is a historic day for the company, and even more so, it marks the beginning of a new era that promises to be positive and successful in the long term.
