An Atlas Air Boeing 747 Freighter departs Los Angeles

Atlas Air will increase its commitment to the Boeing 747F after reaching an agreement to source funding for the planes in mid-July.

As part of its bid to secure funding, Atlas Air will consider adding three additional units to its growing fleet.

The 747F has been selected specifically because of its capabilities for major freight operators. While the 747 is no longer produced, with the final delivery of the -8F to Atlas Air, it remains an important type for freight operators worldwide, with its unparalleled capacity.

This freighter has been a staple of the Atlas Air operation in recent history, and its capabilities will be hugely important long into the future.

Atlas Air has, on several occasions, highlighted its Amazon CMI service, which, while incredibly important to sustain its operations, will end in mid-2025.

As a result, Atlas Air knows it needs to adjust and optimise its network quite considerably, and thanks to this, much focus will be placed on where to deploy its aircraft.

Atlas Air has stated that utilising widebody aircraft will be critical, and it’ll look to continue expanding its commitment to widebody freighters, whether through acquiring mid-life 747 freighters or, potentially, 777 freighters.

The 747s’ large cargo capacity means Atlas Air can recommit to emerging or existing markets with additional capacity. The freight operator notes that this will emphasise its reliability and commitment to customers across a global supply chain.
