Boeing has officially announced that Robert K. “Kelly” Ortberg will become Boeing’s new president and chief executive officer.
The decision was reached following a Board of Directors mission to find a worthy replacement for Dave Calhoun, who would epitomise the manufacturer’s future direction.
Once implemented, set to take place effective August 8, 2024, Ortberg will also serve on the Boeing board of directors and have an uphill battle to turn around the planemaker’s fortunes.
Boeing’s search for a new CEO followed Dave Calhoun’s retirement announcement. This move followed a lengthy stay in the role, during which he joined as CEO at the height of the global pandemic and Boeing’s biggest crisis.
However, Dave Calhoun’s tenure has been far from optimal. The CEO’s reign ended abruptly following a new crisis arising from a door blowout incident at the top of the 2024 calendar year.
The door blowout on the 737 MAX with Alaska Airlines uncovered much greater problems within the Boeing operation, revealing the lack of work done during Calhoun’s tenure to instil an as-promised culture of safety.
Kelly has been found following a major search and extensive process, as revealed by the Chair of the Boeing board. The planemaker was hellbent on identifying someone capable and with the right skills to take Boeing into a new chapter where it aims to restore itself as a great planemaker.
As Calhoun looks set to depart, Boeing thanked him for his service and for helping the company during arguably some of its biggest challenges. Despite this, the planemaker knows this is the optimal time to move on and will, as such, move forward with Ortberg.
Ortberg says that joining Boeing is an honour and a great humbling experience. He recognises Boeing’s tremendous history and is committed to continuing the tradition with safety at the forefront. While much work is required, he’s excited.
Boeing’s new CEO doesn’t come with a lack of experience by any means; Ortberg, who is 64, has had more than 35 years in the aerospace sector, with his most notable position involving its presidency and CEO at Rockwell Collins.
Before this, he had several other important roles throughout the industry and was chair of other boards of governors. Boeing sees him, therefore, as more than well-equipped to navigate the many challenges present on Day 1 of his arrival into office.
Ortberg has an uphill battle, but Boeing will feel his appointment will give the planemaker a fresh lease of life, allowing it to move forward more positively and aim to turn around its fortunes.
