Suspended low-cost Australian carrier Bonza has seen its workforce of more than 300 employees sacked as hopes for a buy rapidly diminish.
This move comes after the airline entered voluntary administration in late April. Following this, staff were put in limbo with no understanding of the direction and were also unable to obtain key pay.
Thus, pressures were mounting not just on Hall Chadwick’s administrators but also on staff who had mortgages, bills, and so much more that needed to be paid. Additionally, considering that these employees had also been going without pay, it proved to be a difficult landscape.
This morning, through a virtual meeting, the more than 300 staff, or legends, as Bonza calls them, were told they would no longer have a place at Bonza. Concerns continue for the carrier’s future.
Bonza entered the industry at the beginning of 2023, hoping to reshape how travel was offered in Australia. However, the airline encountered substantial turbulence during its brief stint, and the pressures mounted, leading to a shutdown at the end of April 2024.
Hall Chadwick said in a statement that while this decision is not taken lightly, it’s required. The administrators know that not just the staff but also customers need to understand what Bonza’s bleak future looks like.
All of the airline’s Boeing 737 MAX jets have left Australia, and the airline has been grounded for nearly two months. While there were reportedly interested parties, none of this interest has fabricated into something firm enough to see the airline return.
The Australian aviation scene has struggled to successfully welcome low-cost travel despite several attempts and travellers’ appetites for lower airfares across the country.
Furthermore, Bonza’s shutdown presents several challenges, including the prospective forfeiting of a valuable air operator’s license that took time to secure. Thus, Hall Chadwick has an uphill battle to end the saga in the best possible way for all parties.
