Cathay Pacific has announced its plans to collaborate with Singapore Airlines across several sustainability initiatives.

The MoU signed days ago focused on advocating for the further development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, the partnership hopes to enable the more widespread future use of SAF.

Both airline executives highlighted the importance by signing at the 80th edition of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit.

As part of our collaborative ethos of ‘Greener Together’, we actively seek like-minded industry leaders for strategic partnerships in transitioning to sustainable aviation. Our collaboration with Singapore Airlines aims to accelerate and support the development of the SAF supply chain in the region, fostering a reliable SAF ecosystem to enable the industry to achieve its long-term decarbonisation goals. Cathay was one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of 10% SAF for its total fuel consumption by 2030, and we are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry’s transition towards a greener future.

Mr Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Cathay Group

Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have already committed to achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. By focusing their futures on the collaborative effort of implementing SAF more widely, they believe this will drive further positive ramifications across the business.

The collaborative effort will see Cathay and Singapore jointly advocate for greater use of SAF in the region it calls home. The advocacy will be done through the airlines, which will leverage their position and significant customer base to spread more public awareness.

Means such as supportive policies and promoting the creation of a standard global account and reporting framework will also be important. The airlines highlight ensuring transparency and verifiability around emission reduction will be huge.

Joint procurement of sustainable aviation fuel in specific locations will also be hugely important for the two airlines. Away from this, in the second part, the airlines hope to exchange the best practices to reduce single-use practices across their business. Sustainability should then be improved.
