Boeing shareholders voted to approve a payout to outgoing CEO Dave Calhoun worth almost USD 33 million at its Annual General Meeting.
Payment packages such as these aren’t uncommon for outgoing executives. However, the significant sum has been largely criticised by onlookers due to the turmoil in which Calhoun leaves Boeing.
2024 was earmarked as an important year for the manufacturer to continue stabilising its operation. However, one week later, a 737 MAX experienced a door blowout incident that resulted in further issues being found on the aircraft.
Following further issues, identified as loose bolts, the manufacturer was once more placed under mounting pressures. Following groundings, losses, audits, and formal investigations, Dave Calhoun would be among several executives axed at Boeing as part of wholesale changes.
Changes such as Calhoun’s upcoming departure as the manufacturer’s CEO were deemed important as the company attempted to instil a revised safety culture.
The Controversial Package
As part of the compensation package, Calhoun sees USD 1.4 million in salary and stock awards worth USD 30 million.
Despite strong pushback from many on the decision to move forward with the package for the outgoing executive, several members have backed their decision. These members have cited that the amount is a revised total that isn’t as high as the amount could’ve been following an overhaul.
While attempted justifications exist, most of the public disagrees with this approved package. Most argue that the package is a reward for once more contributing to dismantling a storied manufacturer and then exiting at an optimal time before the hard yards truly commence.
Additional decisions, such as Calhoun’s being re-elected to remain on the Boeing board, just not in his CEO title, have raised alarm bells. According to many, this manufacturer cannot get much right.

All this comes following fresh concerns from the Department of Justice regarding a potential decision being analysed to prosecute Boeing over crashes in 2018 and 2019 following the determining of a deal being breached.
Those who approved the package argue that despite how 2024 has played out, Calhoun was instrumental in navigating Boeing through the global pandemic, which presented some of the manufacturer’s toughest challenges since its establishment.
Looking Ahead
For Boeing, Dave Calhoun, and others internally, the remainder of 2024 is expected to be hugely important for the long-term future of the plane maker. However, arguably, this has been a saying repeated year after year, with positive outcomes not arriving.
Looking ahead, Boeing must continue its search for Calhoun’s successor. The search is touted as tough yet important. The person who takes over will have the task of not turning around the manufacturer’s fortunes for the first time and making it a leader once more in the aviation industry and America.
