WestJet continues expanding its single-aisle network by announcing plans to grow its 737 MAX fleet to include two additional aircraft.
The Canadian airline has secured deals for two more 737-8 jets from Aviation Capital Group and High Ridge Aviation, providing WestJet with one unit each.
WestJet expects the 737 MAX jets secured as part of this deal to be integrated sometime in 2024, weeks after the airline’s previous announcement.
Earlier in June, the airline secured three additional 737 MAX 8 jets from BOC Aviation and another jet thanks to AerDragon. At the beginning of the calendar year, the airline announced further contracts for the MAX family.
Ultimately, all these contracts will enable WestJet to offer greater connectivity across its route network. Meanwhile, it’ll also allow more flights and the ability to meet increased demand across key markets.
Furthermore, the airline says that while the aircraft will quickly benefit the company’s network, they won’t immediately reflect WestJet’s interior cabin experience. The carrier notes that these interiors will be updated and refreshed as soon as possible after delivery.
The main priority is to get these aircraft operational and benefit the airline’s overall route network. Then, focus on truly creating the onboard experience customers are known to enjoy.
WestJet’s ambitions have remained the same for some time: to offer Canadians affordable air travel. To do this, more aircraft are required. WestJet knows that if it ordered aircraft directly from the source, Boeing, it wouldn’t be able to obtain them as soon as it would through these agreements with leasing companies.
WestJet has been utilizing the capabilities of the Boeing 737 MAX for some time now, and the improved efficiency and other benefits are critical to the airline’s long-term success. As a result, the carrier has been adopting the aircraft quickly and deployed it across its network to reap the full rewards of the next-generation aircraft.
