On 31 May 2026, Turkish Airlines enjoyed its busiest operational day in history. The Chairman of the Turkish Airlines Group, Murat Şeker, flagged the news on LinkedIn.
The monumental day saw the mainline business alongside its subsidiary Ajet welcome approximately 330,000 passengers on 1,877 flights in a 24-hour period, a record for the airline.
These figures, the Chairman is calling a testament to the work it has done to make this happen. However, this number will ultimately be nothing compared to the business’s targeted growth moving forward.
A Record-Breaking Day
The day was significant for Turkish Airlines. With around 330,000 passengers moved across the network, this is made possible by the timely departures of more than 1,800 flights and encompasses both domestic and international services.
The hub airport of Istanbul handled the bulk of the traffic, with the network stretching to over 120 countries and nearly 350 destinations. On Sunday, it was operating at its absolute limit, per the Chairman, but ultimately without major hiccups.
Şeker says that the timing of the day was critical in allowing this to take place. 22 May through 31 May coincided with the Eid al-Adha (the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice), which ran from 26 May to 30 May, 2026.

This is one of the more important religious holidays in the Islamic World, and, as a result, it triggers a spike in travel, with millions returning to their home countries to visit family and friends. When combined with the summer travel season heating up, it’s a scenario where Turkish Airlines finds itself bursting.
A Busy Last Week Of May
The period flagged, with holidays, summer schedules being implemented, and more, meant that the prolonged period, exceeding just over a week, saw intense activity, with the record-breaking day just one part of a much wider operation.
Şeker confirmed that during the 22 May through 31 May window, the business carried 2.815 million passengers and operated 16,580 flights. That is an average of 281,000 passengers every single day, and the May 31 figures exceeded that average by some margin.
For Turkish Airlines, ensuring that this number of passengers can reach their destinations seamlessly is no easy feat. The operational challenge is being flagged as immense. With nearly 2,000 flights a day and the importance of these flights heightening with the customer base, there has to be expert coordination at every angle.
The business must ensure that, whether it’s aircraft deployment, cabin crew, or even the ground staff processing passengers or handling baggage, there are no hiccups that delay flights, cancel them, or compromise the safety of passengers and crew aboard the planes at any point.
Istanbul can accommodate the high passenger volumes seen during this period; however, there are complex factors, such as tight connection times for international transfers and more. As such, Şeker flags the employees’ work to ensure that the integrity of operations during this period remained at its highest level, and it’s a sign of the future.
This Will Become The Normal For Turkish Airlines
Ultimately, the record-breaking day for Turkish Airlines, if everything goes according to plan, will quickly be a thing of the past and will be consistently surpassed over time.

Turkish Airlines has an ambitious long-term plan to expand its fleet and thus increase its network reach. With that in mind, it will be handy to have a much larger number of passengers in the coming years. As a result, these peak days, when records are broken, or busy week-long periods, are a test of resources as the growth trajectory continues.
With a view to becoming one of the largest carriers in the world, the airline hopes to have a fleet of over 1,000 planes by 2036 and a network to match it that covers most of the globe. That ambition means the current record of 330,000 passengers, while impressive, will be a fraction of what the business hopes to achieve when it reaches its full scale.
