Spirit Airlines is moving ahead with mass flight cancellations just a week after once more filing for bankruptcy.

The U.S. carrier confirmed to CBS that twelve markets across the United States will be axed from October 2, 2025, as part of network optimisation.

The following cities were axed: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Birmingham, Alabama; Boise, Idaho; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Oakland, California; Columbia, South Carolina; Portland, Oregon; Sacramento, California; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Diego, California; and San Jose, California.

Meanwhile, other planned service launches for October are being shelved as the airline battens down the hatches and attempts to navigate the turbulent period ahead for its business.

For Spirit Airlines, there’s much importance on network optimisation during this challenging period. Smaller airlines like Spirit must find ways to utilise their available assets best; however, that has become increasingly harder.

Spirit Airlines, while initially committing to operate flights as usual, now, a week later, is making these significant route changes in a bid to ensure its survival. This follows many analysts who believe there’s doubt the airline will be able to survive in the long term.

While the departure of Spirit Airlines from these markets will impact passengers booked on these services, as with most network cuts, other airlines will more often than not fill the available slots.

In the case of Spirit Airlines, there has already been movement from Frontier Airlines and United Airlines, one a low-cost carrier and the other a premium company, in a bid to cover the lost ground.

In fact, United Airlines went as far as stating that it was adding these flights to help support customers and would continue to do so in preparation for Spirit possibly going out of business, which would be very disruptive to the industry. This was a comment that Spirit called borderline obsession.”

What Happened To Spirit Airlines?

The move to axe 12 cities from the airline’s network follows a late-August re-entry into Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in as many years.

The U.S. carrier stated that this move was essential to ensure it had a chance of restructuring and survival, thereby giving it the time and flexibility to implement all the necessary changes to ensure a long-term future.

A move to enter bankruptcy followed multiple months of dialogue between key airline executives, partners, and other stakeholders in an effort to determine what was best for the business.

This move also followed early-August reporting, which indicated Spirit Airlines was in a fair amount of trouble, fighting for survival, in fact, if things were not to change.

It has been quite challenging for the airline over recent years; fundamentally, there has been an inability to turn a profit due to increased competition and poor decision-making

Additionally, Spirit Airlines’ potential merger with JetBlue was rejected. This was a prospective move that would’ve given the low-cost business some added security; since then, though, it has been messy for the company.

Now, Spirit Airlines must make intense decisions, such as the closure of certain locations and therefore routes, in order to survive, for just because the airline is entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection does not mean it is guaranteed to survive.
