Airbus and Boeing will compete for a new order from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, specifically for their respective freighter divisions.
Bloomberg reports that the Investment Fund is seeking freighters as part of its efforts to launch a new cargo airline in the region.
The family of aircraft listed is the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350, the latter to be certified and considered the new era for freight travel.
Boeing is moving ahead with the launch of its 777-8F, a next-gen freighter that will replace the 777F and compete with the A350F by bringing greater industry efficiency.
However, one thing that the American planemaker has up on Airbus is the 777F. This current model has fantastic availability and can be a preferred option sooner rather than later if required.
This preferred plane stems significantly from availability. The 777F is readily available for freight operators that require additional fresh capacity sooner rather than later.
If these customers cannot wait many years and deal with uncertainty regarding the certification of the next-gen, then their already flying freighters will be deemed the best option, and typically, the 777F will lead from the front.
A new purchase from Saudi Arabia is a significant commitment to the region, where much focus has been placed on growth, boosting tourism, trade and the economy.
Once ordered, these freighter aircraft would serve new freight divisions at the upcoming Riyadh Air, which will launch passenger flights in 2025 or the already-flying Saudia.
Onlookers have strong thoughts on the development of the Saudi Arabian aviation sector and whether a lot of the cash being injected into new airlines, planes and more will genuinely planned out as intended.
The Kingdom believes air travel is the way to boost key elements of trade, economy, and other aforementioned things. Still, some remain hesitant that all this will succeed and not just outlandish spending.
