Lufthansa Group has confirmed it will suspend all flights to Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH) through 16 October 2026 due to regional instability.

Announced on 8 October 2026, the European airline group says it decided after internal reviews and amid heightened security threats against Saudi Arabia’s capital.

The decision disrupts a large portion of airlines’ international schedules, but is deemed necessary to protect passengers and crew who would normally use the flights.

For now, the suspension runs through 16 October 2026; however, as previous suspensions this year on Middle Eastern routes show, this does not confirm a restart on 17 October 2026, as further reviews take place.

Why Lufthansa Group has decided to suspend flights

Lufthansa Group’s decision reflects deteriorating security around the Riyadh airport that Lufthansa Group airlines serve; it isn’t based on seasonal demand shifts, aircraft availability, or anything else.

An attack that struck Riyadh in the days prior, involving a ballistic missile, raised renewed threats to the safety of airlines serving the region, with instability forcing reevaluation.

Reports after the incident confirmed that smoke was seen from stationary aircraft at the airport, and other nearby activity put the airport’s safety at risk, at least according to many who choose to send their aircraft here.

The disruption therefore extends beyond precautionary cancellations, with onward connectivity impacted and airspace usage shifting as airlines adjust routes to minimise safety risk. Repeated closures of Riyadh airports have threatened local airlines as much as foreign ones.

What is affected as a result of these flight suspensions?

In its decision on Riyadh operations, Lufthansa Group sees several markets affected. First, mainline Lufthansa has suspended its thrice-weekly Frankfurt-to-Riyadh service through mid-October.

ITA Airways is also part of the Group’s connectivity to Riyadh, with the hoped-for resumption of previously announced Rome-to-Riyadh flights in mid-September, with five flights a week. These flights have been suspended since the end of September, and the latest suspension therefore has only pushed their fate further into the month.

Overall, the airport-wide disruptions are affecting more than just Lufthansa Group, with several dozen international flights showing as cancelled and Cirium figures indicating that nearly 50% of outbound flights were cancelled by the afternoon of 8 October 2026.

Those affected are not only flying with airlines based in Riyadh or the Middle East but, fundamentally, with European and Indian carriers that have either reduced their flights or suspended operations entirely for the moment.

As a result, passengers have limited options to reach their final destination from Riyadh or depart back home due to the instability. The lack of safe passage is the biggest concern and, until it is resolved, will continue to cause service suspensions.
