Garuda Indonesia is continuing with its attempts to expand its fleet, confirming it will add new planes in the coming months to meet demand.
The airline’s directors confirmed at a press conference at the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises that four aircraft will join the fleet in the next two months.
Two aircraft will arrive in December, and two further units will arrive in January 2025. One of these new planes has already arrived as part of continued renewal and expansion efforts.
The newly delivered aircraft is being prepared for service entry in one of the airline’s hangars. This includes fundamental work such as painting and cabin interior optimisation, among many other services, to prepare a plane for service with an airline.
Garuda Indonesia says that once the aircraft enters service, its fleet will grow, and further network optimisation will also be possible.
Given the busy seasonal period, these planes arriving now have been in a calculated manner. This period hosts the Christmas and New Year celebrations, bringing many people to airports to connect with friends and loved ones.
Garuda Indonesia is also forecasting significant demand increases during this period. As a result, any additional capacity it can offer through additional aircraft will be crucial in its continued pursuit of sustained profitability.
Fleet data indicates Garuda Indonesia took delivery of a 737-800 in November, which was provided on a lease and registered as PK-GUF. This aircraft previously flew with Garuda Indonesia and then with Fly Baghdad before returning home.
Big Plans At Garuda Indonesia
The last few years have been incredibly turbulent for Garuda Indonesia, and as a result, a focus on expansion hasn’t arguably been what it once was; that is about to change, however.
The company’s new focus rests on its ability to be profitable for the long term. It is aligning itself with competition across key markets in its hotly-congested home region.

An added focus on expanding the fleet, either through new aircraft purchases or short-term leasing arrangements, will make the expansion of the route network possible.
Given the company’s status as a flag carrier, it’s important to rebuild the airline to a state where people can be proud of its position, which has been arguably missing, according to some.
In the long term, Garuda Indonesia would like to build its fleet to 150 aircraft to adequately serve the international network, both with new cities and capacity upgrades to cities already on the network.
The focus seems clearer than ever, and the groundwork is being laid at the company to achieve what must be achieved, much of this relating to the expansion efforts.
