Finnair has confirmed it will continue suspending its Helsinki (HEL) to Dubai (DXB) service for the Northern Winter 2026/27 schedule.
Previously expected to resume on its international network throughout the winter months, the suspension has now been extended due to volatility in the Middle East and security concerns.
The Finnish carrier’s decision comes just days before Emirates is expected to launch scheduled services between Dubai and Helsinki, and will account for a large share of the available seat capacity following Finnair’s departure during this period.
Finnair will cancel flights between Helsinki and Dubai from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, covering the entire winter 2026/27 timetable.
The core of the Oneworld alliance member’s reasoning behind the cancellation is not strictly weaker demand, but a response to the security situation in the Middle East, which remains volatile and has not calmed to the level Finnair would want to enable a relaunch.
The latest decision follows the outbreak of conflict between the United States and Iran in late February 2026, which was a key catalyst behind the initial suspension. The airline will not return before the end of the winter flying programme and has yet to publish anything firm about its Northern Summer 2027 schedule.
European carriers like Finnair have become increasingly cautious about operations to the Middle East and neighbouring regions following the outbreak of conflict in Iran and broader instability. Changes to airspace availability or heightened risk on scheduled services have prompted airlines to continue suspending routine services to locations like Dubai.

While Gulf carriers like Emirates have been able to rebuild their schedules over recent months to largely replicate what they offered before the outbreak of conflict in the region, European carriers have not been able to achieve the same.
Emirates’ Helsinki Launch Puts Pressure on Finnair
With Finnair not offering scheduled passenger flights to Dubai for the entire Northern Winter 2026/27 season, this is one factor affecting long-haul connectivity and, therefore, the Finnish carrier’s network map; however, it also has a competitive angle.
Emirates is scheduled to launch its first service between its mega hub of Dubai International and Helsinki on 1 October 2026, with a daily flight operated by its new Airbus A350-900. The flights, EK167 and EK168, will effectively take on the role Finnair previously performed on the route.
With an airline such as Emirates, with its status within the industry, operating the first year-round direct link and the introduction of the A350 with its state-of-the-art Business Class and Premium Economy, this places significant pressure on Finnair to ever return to the sector.
The flag carrier’s withdrawal has allowed Emirates to leverage its stability, fleet, and demand and enter without direct competition from the local flag carrier during its first Northern Winter schedule.
