Etihad Airways is making a change to its international network, aligning with its efforts to introduce the latest generation of fleet to customers.

The Abu Dhabi-based carrier states that its service to Kolkata, India, will be enhanced with the introduction of the next-generation Airbus A321LR.

From September 26, 2025, all flights operated between Zayed International Airport, Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata (CCU) will utilise the A321LR.

As a result, customers will be able to experience Luxury First Suites, with the ability to book Business Class that features fully lie-flat seating. Moreover, even flying in Economy Class comes with the latest amenities.

Across the cabin, high-speed WiFi, a 4K touchscreen, and ambient lighting features are provided to deliver the best single-aisle product possible.

In essence, Etihad Airways aims to bring a widebody experience to a single-aisle jet, especially considering that for some customers, there are downsides to flying longer journeys on single-aisle jets such as the A321LR.

However, in an era where the development of the A321neo has taken the industry by storm and airlines have scrambled to purchase planes with greater range, it is becoming the new industry norm for longer single-aisle flights to debut.

Etihad Airways’ Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer stated that India remains a key market for them, and as a result, upgrading service to Kolkata represents the first step in many to come, offering greater service to customers.

Inside The Etihad Airways A321LR

Inside the newly delivered Airbus A321LR, Etihad Airways says it’s bringing enhanced space and privacy while also not forgoing premium amenities.

The First Suite, right at the front of the plane, provides fully flat beds in a 1-1 configuration with direct aisle access, a step above Business Class.

However, in this three-class layout, the carrier also offers Business Class with 14 lie-flat seats, ensuring that on medium-haul routes, travellers have options similar to those on a wide-body aircraft.

Lastly, an Economy Class comes with what the carrier describes as generous seating and an advanced in-flight entertainment system to make the experience more seamless.

While some passengers may be opposed to single-aisle medium-haul flying, this would be the vocal minority, and Etihad, among other airlines, knows that these flights still sell. The operating economics are too good to pass up.
