Boeing 777-9

The Boeing 777-9 is the flagship variant of Boeing's 777X programme, set to become the world's largest twin-engine jet, combining composite folding wingtips with new GE9X engines to redefine long-haul economics. The aircraft remains in flight testing and has not yet entered commercial service. Dj's Aviation covers its specifications, programme status and future operators below.

History & Development

Boeing announced the 777-9 in November 2013 as part of the 777X programme, an evolution of the 777-300ER retaining its twin-aisle cross-section while introducing a new composite wing with folding tips (the first such feature on a commercial airliner), along with the new GE9X turbofan. The programme attracted more than 250 orders on its launch day, the largest in Boeing wide-body history.

The 777-9 prototype completed its maiden flight on 25 January 2020, but a series of certification challenges (including engine compressor issues, a pressurisation problem detected during testing, and a cracked thrust link discovered in 2024) have repeatedly delayed entry into service.

As of early 2026, the Boeing 777-9 remains in FAA flight-test certification, with Boeing targeting certification early in 2027 and first delivery to launch customer Lufthansa in 2027. The 777-9 is expected to seat around 426 passengers in a standard three-class configuration once configurations are finalised.

Cabin: Seating & Configuration

Not yet available. The Boeing 777-9 retains the wide 777 fuselage cross-section (roughly 6.2 m interior width), which is expected to allow a nine-abreast economy layout consistent with earlier 777 variants. However, as no aircraft has entered service, no airline has published a certified seat count, pitch, or class configuration for the 777-9. Once Lufthansa or another launch operator confirms its cabin layout, this section will be updated.

The folding wingtip mechanism reduces the span from 71.8 m to 64.8 m on the ground, keeping the 777-9 compatible with ICAO Code E gates shared by the 777-300ER.

Performance & Range

The 777-9’s combination of composite wing and GE9X engines is expected to deliver roughly 12% better fuel efficiency per seat than the 777-300ER it succeeds, once in service.

Engines & Fuel

The Boeing 777-9 is exclusively powered by the General Electric GE9X-105B1A, the world’s largest commercial turbofan at 3.4 m in diameter. Each engine delivers approximately 105,000 lbf of thrust. Key improvements over the GE90 predecessor include a carbon-fibre composite fan, a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) hot section, and a refined combustion system that reduces NOx emissions.

In-Seat Amenities & Tech

Not yet confirmed. As the Boeing 777-9 has not entered service, no airline has published finalised in-seat amenity specifications. Based on industry expectations for new-build aircraft, connectivity and entertainment features are likely to include Wi-Fi, USB power, and seatback entertainment — but these should be treated as anticipated, not confirmed, until launch operators publish their cabin details.

Production & Timeline

Boeing assembles the 777-9 at its Everett facility in Washington, alongside the 777 and 787 families.

Incidents & Safety

No hull-loss events have been recorded, as the Boeing 777-9 has not yet entered commercial service. The certification journey to date has included:

  • 2020: Engine containment test issues led to a design review of the GE9X fan
  • 2021: A pressurisation issue detected during flight testing led to a temporary grounding of test aircraft
  • 2022–23: Additional structural fatigue testing extended the certification timeline
  • 2024: A cracked thrust link discovered on a test aircraft grounded the fleet for several months
  • 2025: Boeing booked a US$4.9 billion pre-tax charge and pushed first delivery from 2026 into 2027
  • Early 2026: FAA flight-test certification (Type Inspection Authorization) ongoing; certification targeted for early 2027
