Changi. Singapore - Nov 20 2022 - Singapore Airlines Airbus A380-900 taxi to the gate at the terminal of Singapore Changi International Airport.

Singapore Airlines has resumed seasonal Airbus A380 service to Melbourne, with the superjumbo returning on 29 March 2026.

For the Changi-based carrier, this fresh decision allows the superjumbo to return to the Victorian city after more than a couple of years away. It signifies a reshuffling of aircraft away from specific markets for redeployment here, where passenger demand has been strong.

What Has Changed Between Singapore and Melbourne?

The Airbus A380 will operate across SQ237, which is slated to depart Singapore at 0145 and arrive in Melbourne at 1100. The return flight, meanwhile, SQ228 departs Melbourne at 1530 and arrives in Singapore on the same day at 2120.

Singapore Airlines will deploy the superjumbo to Melbourne daily, significantly increasing seat capacity to the city and complementing the many other daily services the airline offers to this part of the country.

The deployment comes following a schedule filing posted earlier in the month, which indicated the carrier would make the adjustment featuring the world’s largest passenger plane.

What Does This Mean For Airline Customers?

For customers of the premium airline, the biggest immediate benefit is additional seats, paired with more premium options catering to corporate travellers or those willing to pay extra for a more upmarket experience.

Singapore Airlines will thus, on the Melbourne segment, showcase its top-end product to more travellers across what is such a pivotal link, with First Class travellers moving up into the suite experience and the A380 providing a more spacious onboard experience.

With more seats, the airline also gives its customers the chance to choose among the many daily services when planning their journey, whether for the ideal time of arrival at Changi or for an onward connection offered by the business from its hub.

What’s Next For The Singapore Airlines A380

Moves such as redeploying the Airbus A380 on service between Changi and Melbourne are part of a wider, aggressive push by Singapore Airlines to continue reviving the superjumbo across the network, especially for the Northern Summer 2026 season.

The world’s largest passenger plane, despite a bleak outlook during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was grounded and effectively retired by many airlines due to reduced demand, has surged back in use with many airlines for a host of reasons.

For Singapore Airlines, a world-renowned premium airline, its capacity has been pivotal to aggressive deployment on high-demand routes, with the aircraft remaining central to the evolving long-haul strategy rather than being phased out.

Melbourne’s selection as a city for the A380, even if not year-round, underscores its importance to the network, especially when considering the many other daily flights on other widebody aircraft at different time slots.
