American Airlines has announced plans to launch seven new international routes and three new destinations in 2027.
The U.S. carrier, following in the footsteps of rival United Airlines, which also announced an expansion for 2027, plans to focus much of the expansion on Philadelphia and New York JFK, with its latest A321XLR making it possible.
Philadelphia Gets A Large Share Of New Flights
Philadelphia Airport (PHL) will gain three destinations: Porto (OPO), Reykjavik (KEF) and Vienna (VIE) as part of the latest schedule expansion unveiled by American Airlines, with Reykjavik returning to the network for the first time since 2019.
The Philadelphia to Porto flights are slated to commence on 28 March 2027, with the airline using its brand-new Airbus A321XLR between the two cities. The XLR will also launch service between Philadelphia and Vienna from 6 May 2027, with the standard A321neo on the Reykjavik route starting on 27 May 2027.
American Airlines will operate the Vienna flight through early January 2028, according to its press release, extending beyond the typical northern summer operating window and deep into the Northern Winter 2027/28 schedule.
As American Airlines looks to develop its service across the Atlantic, deploying the A321XLR is one of the most significant components of the latest schedule release. This new single-aisle aircraft is allowing American to open thinner transatlantic routes on a plane a fraction of the size and expense of a widebody.

Some destinations American Airlines is set to serve from Philadelphia warrant year-round or seasonal service but don’t have enough capacity for a widebody. With the A321XLR’s extra-long range and still-suitable capacity, the airline can now offer connections with an aircraft that’s finally feasible.
American Airlines Expands From New York
American Airlines also plans to offer improved service from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK), with several new daily flights launching in 2027. First, from 28 March, service to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) will launch, to be followed by Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) on 6 May.
As with the airline’s Philadelphia route expansion, the A321XLR will also enable these two routes. The Amsterdam service specifically complements the year-round Philadelphia flights as well as the seasonal Dallas/Fort Worth service.
By sending the A321XLR to Amsterdam from New York, American Airlines can slot it into a shorter route segment where transatlantic demand is present and valuable. Additionally, the airline will compete with fellow U.S. carriers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, as well as KLM, which has its hub at Schiphol.

American Airlines will offer a four-day-a-week flight to London Heathrow from JFK starting 28 March 2027. The fourth daily flight will be operated, the airline says, by the Boeing 787-9, configured with Flagship Suites to meet premium demand more effectively.
With its established joint venture with British Airways, the airline will offer 14 daily flights between New York and London across the Northern summer 2027 schedule. The city pair is among the busiest and most lucrative globally, making it a key focus for premium revenue and connectivity.
