Berlin, Germany - June 7, 2024: Airbus A321neo XLR displayed at aerospace exhibition ILA Berlin 2024

American Airlines has commenced flights with its newest aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR, a move that is six years in the making since its first purchase.

The U.S. carrier celebrated the inaugural flight, which carried more than 150 passengers between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and marked the airline’s first to operate the A321XLR.

As the airline wraps its head around the latest technology to be rolled out across its operations, the jet will be deployed on transcontinental routes first to familiarise the business with it.

Starting next year, the airline will offer service aboard its Airbus A321XLR from Boston to Los Angeles and New York JFK, with a stop in San Francisco. These will launch on July 2, 2026 and May 7, 2026, respectively.

However, it’s the planned commencement of the first transatlantic service with the aircraft slated for March 8, 2026, that’s the real focal point for this aircraft, as the airline offers New York JFK-Edinburgh, Scotland flights, showing just what the XLR is capable of within the airline’s network.

Inside the A321SXLR are 20 flagship suite seats, which recline into a lie-flat bed; 12 of the airline’s Premium Economy seats; and, lastly, 123 seats in what is described as a reimagined economy class make up the back of the cabin.

That premium feel is precisely what American Airlines is betting on to be game-changing for airlines operating moving forward, as it aims to close the gap between itself and competitors Delta and United in the U.S. sector, which it has noticeably fallen behind in recent times.

A Game-Changing Aircraft For American Airlines

The A321XLR, in more ways than one, is expected to be a game changer for American Airlines, primarily driven by the company’s need to change customer perception of the business, which has plateaued and, if anything, grown less favourable over recent years.

American Airlines has recognised this and is looking to the A321XLR as a fresh change that’ll allow premium travel to once more take the spotlight in the airline’s operations, with more booking opportunities available.

The 20 flagship suites all have direct aisle access, lie-flat seating, more storage space, wireless charging, and other high-profile amenities that make the experience worthwhile on a single-aisle jet. Premium Economy also has enhanced win-win headrests, calf and footrests, and wireless charging.

American Airlines’ path to begin scheduled passenger flights with the jet began in 2019, when the airline became one of the founding companies to commit to the next-generation aircraft at the Paris Airshow, aligning with the launch of the new derivative.

The purchase involved converting 30 A321neo slots to the extended-range model and placing a direct order for 20 XLRs, bringing the total to 50. However, from order to first delivery, it hasn’t been smooth sailing the whole time, with supply chain woes, delivery delays, certification delays, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

But as American Airlines looks not just to grow but to renew its fleet, there’s a lot of importance placed on the delivery of additional A321XLR jets and other upcoming models to expand the route network and increase customer satisfaction.
