Stuttgart, Germany - September 8, 2021: Air Cairo Airbus A320neo airplane at Stuttgart airport (STR) in Germany.

Airbus has secured a new A320neo order from Air Cairo, with a firm contract for 15 jets and its first direct deal for the jets.

The Egyptian carrier plans to introduce these aircraft alongside its existing fleet, which was previously built through the leasing market.

Air Cairo signed the contract at El Alamein International Airshow and intends to grow the fleet well beyond 130 aircraft by 2034. However, with just over 45 aircraft today and only seven jets five years ago, the next 8 years will bring considerable growth.

A First Direct Airbus Purchase

For Air Cairo, the agreement marks a shift from its previous approach, which centred on financing rather than committing directly to aircraft through a purchase. The airline has relied on leased aircraft as a quicker way to expand its scheduled charter and leisure operations.

This new commitment, however, adds to the directly owned A320neo aircraft in the fleet, with chief executive and chairman Hussein Sherif saying that combining owned aircraft with leased capacity provides greater flexibility and financial efficiency as they pursue growth.

The A320neos are intended to provide capacity in the coming decades and meet growth not just domestically and regionally, but also internationally, where travel demand has scaled up in recent years.

Airbus nor Air Cairo have specified the delivery dates for the aircraft, and Airbus itself has referred to the deal as, for the A320neo, the exact specifics on the interior layout also to come in due course; however, Air Cairo already flies a substantial number of A320s, including the neo on lease terms.

More Than 130 Aircraft For Air Cairo?

A new order for the Airbus A320 aligns closely with the 2034 view of a fleet exceeding 130 passenger jets operating scheduled service from Egypt domestically, regionally, and internationally as demand skyrockets.

In recent years, the airline has had the chance to scale up considerably, with just seven aircraft in the fleet in 2031, now rising to more than 45 planes in 2026, according to Airbus.

The current fleet mix includes the A320 family, including the A320neo and A320ceo, along with regional jets such as the ATR 72-600 turboprops and Embraer E190 regional jets. The mix reflects a need to serve not just the domestic market but, fundamentally, international leisure markets.

With such a heightened pace of growth for Air Cairo, increasing the fleet size has become a higher priority. Deals for aircraft like the 15 A320neo are increasing the delivery book. They will enable the business to reach the 130-jet figure, as programmes already have production slots sold out deep into the next decade.
