Abra Group, home to Avianca Airlines, GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, and even a stake in Wamos Air, is expanding its aircraft portfolio.

At the end of the 2024 Farnborough Airshow, the Group signed an MoU with Airbus for five A350-900s to boost future flying across the Group.

However, the end destination of these five aircraft was not publicly disclosed, and the deal is still obviously in the early stages, given that it has yet to be firm.

Ch-aviation reports through a spokesperson for Abra Group that tentative delivery dates are included in the purchase but are also not publicly disclosed.

The new deal aligns with the Group’s comprehensive strategic plan for growth, which includes launching new routes and increasing passenger numbers annually.

The CEO of Abra Group stated that they were delighted with the purchase and believe the A350s will provide them with the best in class passenger experience and lower cost per seat than competitor aircraft and airlines.

All these associated benefits will significantly improve expenses across the Group and further align with the sustainability goals that have been outlined.

Onlookers have begun deliberating where these five A350s will head once they are firmed up. The deliberation stems from the fleet strategies at the relevant airlines.

Avianca flies a fleet of all Boeing 787s for its widebody operations, whereas GOL doesn’t have a single widebody aircraft. As a result, this only leaves Wamos, who flies the A330 series and specialises in charter operations rather than scheduled passenger flights.

Further clarification will be provided on the end destination for these units over time; however, between now and then, questions will continue to be raised about the long-term strategy within the Group.

Airbus further highlighted in its release that it enjoyed success in the Latin America and Caribbean market, with sales exceeding 1,300 units and a backlog closing in on 500 units.

The region becomes a further highlight with the knowledge Airbus has secured around 75% of all available orders since 1994, a colossal win for the planemaker.
